Most tech-savvy users know how to select multiple files: Hold down the Ctrl key while clicking each individual file. Of course, that can get a little tricky if you're working with a long list and/or a lot of files: It's too easy to mis-click and "lose" all your selections.
That's why I'm loving an undocumented Vista feature: checkboxes. Instead of holding down the Ctrl key, you simply click a checkbox next to each file you want to select.
To enable this handy option, open any system window (like Computer or Explorer), click the Organize menu, and then choose Folder and Search Options. Next, click the View tab, and then scroll down until you see Use check boxes to select items. Enable it, then click OK.
Presto! Now, whenever you mouse over a file, a checkbox should appear in the left column. Select multiple files, then drag 'em wherever you want or do whatever else you need to do. Also, note that you can click the "master" checkbox next to Name to instantly select all the files (as an alternative to the old-standby Ctrl-A).
How about an epic PC versus console gaming smackdown, in the tradition of end-of-year numbers lists?
I spent part of 2008 taking polite shots at PC foibles like Microsoft's halfhearted Games for Windows initiative, the functionality and game support travesties that plagued Vista for the better part of 2007 into 2008, PC gaming's dwindling stable of A-list exclusives, and the now impossible to miss short-term-gains mentality that's dropping eggs in low-risk baskets labeled "World of Warcraft" and "The Sims."
So here's my last minute about-face defending the PC as a viable games platform, and a friendly rejoinder to Techradar's "12 reasons console gaming beats PCs."
1. PCs are scalable. Sure, it's a glass half-full or half-empty proposition, because component upgrades often vandalize (and scandalize) your wallet. Question is, would you rather have a platform that can play nearly anything, past to present, contingent on do-it-yourself propensity? Or be locked into a restrictively governed molding that's only changed out once every half-decade or so?
2. PC games are endlessly manipulable. Another "your mileage may vary" point, because tinkering's not for everyone, and plenty of people just want something that works. On the other hand, if you've only played Far Cry 2 on a console, you've been prowling around in visuals that barely shadow the game's tricked-out PC sibling. And while stuff like NVIDIA's PhysX is accessible on NVIDIA-derivative consoles, don't expect Mirror's Edge to ever look as gleefully dissolvable on a PS3 or Xbox 360 as its physics-enhanced PC version. Also: Two words = mod scene.
3. PCs ape consoles in emulation. Here's a point often missed. PCs can be nearly any past-tense console, by hook or by crook. Miss stuff like Rare's Wizards & Warriors? The original tag-team Mario Bros.? Mega Man? Berzerk? No need to track down a moldering Atari 2600 or original NES or Edward Stratton III's original Tempest arcade box. Just find an emulator and a stack of ROMs, or a Flash or Java site like PlayNES.net running scads of these in ostensibly legal emulation (including save-state options!) and you're golden.
4. PCs can be anywhere. If you're living in the 1970s, you think computers still hunker in lightless basements, or converted linen closets, or musty shag-carpeted attics. I've never parked my PC anywhere other than a desk/armoire/piped-and-fluted-hybrid in a living room within cabling distance of my Dolby-fied flat-screened piece-de-resistance. Swapping between a desktop LCD and your likely larger living room variety is a snap, not to mention that doing so offers more audio/video playback options than any of the console manufacturers.
5. Keyboard and mouse beats all. We've yet to see an interface as intuitive and broadly commanding, including (without question) Nintendo's Wiimote and nunchuk.
6. PCs do gamepads, surprise! Take that, all you blinkered QWERTY mockers. Got an Xbox 360 controller? Plug it into your PC and games like Dead Space and Gears of War adapt instantly. What's more, I dare anyone to invoke a console's comparably foggy web browser and tap out a response to this point cycling through detached-panel ASCII symbols and frantically pulling triggers, one tedious sequential character at a time.
7. Consoles go kaplooey, too. I'll see your "blue screen" and raise you a "red ring" or two (or 33 percent of total, if those early estimates were accurate). Just leave your pity for PC gamers at the door, because consoles are just as prone to bellying up when something short circuits in quality control. (Because, hate to break it to you, consoles are PCs too!) And memo: Game-breaking creepy-crawlies and PC-style firmware updates and patches have consoles on the hook these days, too.
8. Consoles could vanish tomorrow, but PC gaming is forever. Planning to solve for the unified theory of everything while lounging on your sofa in front of you new 50-inch plasma power-gobbler? Chances are, not so much. Feng Shui your heart out, you still need a place to spread the tree-ware and focus without distractions. Vive la PC! In the end, PC gaming soldiers on in part because the business-to-casual range of what we're all up to, day-to-day, remains wildly PC-centric. "And it plays games too?" There you go.
9. PC games are stylistically unbounded. It's like the Irving Berlin song: Anything consoles can do, PCs can do better. Seriously. There's nothing consoles offer that PCs (and PC games) can't, and that's strictly a one-way street. Anything that requires fast-switch precision movement's out the window on 360, Wii, or PS3. Real-time strategy games are a joke a console, and while certain types of tactical third-person shooters work well enough, a decent mouse/keyboard gamer will repeatedly roast someone panning around with a pair of comparably clumsy thumb-sticks. Don't get me started on the complete lack of console support for serious simulations and wargames.
11. PC games cost less. I'm not saying it makes a lick of sense (it doesn't) but Epic's Gears of War cost 60 bucks when it debuted on the 360. When it hit the PC with brand new content, that price dropped to $50, and that's still the going rate for PC A-listers. A $10 delta may not sound like much if you only buy a few games a year, but even two games a month is pushing $240 -- enough to fund a new Xbox 360 or Nintendo Wii every 365 days.
12. Online PC matchmaking is free. I realize it's only Microsoft dragging its base through the mud here, and analysts claiming Xbox Live offers something unique simply wrong. It's worth remembering that online PC matchmaking and multiplayer are, and always have been free. It's not a luxury item, it's not a special service, it's not a value proposition -- it's an entrenched and completely reasonable customer expectation.
13. Piracy ain't just a PC problem. Console piracy rates barely scratch the PC's numbers, but the former's aren't exactly waning either. It's the popularity derivative, stupid. The more people playing console games, the more the scene lasers in on a console's proprietary padlocks, the more increasingly end-user-friendly workaround hacks and mod-jobs and firmware-fooling pre-insert ROM disc tools flood the market. While there may be cash to grab short-term by switching gears, therefore, abandoning the PC over piracy rates may be yet another iteration of the "grass-is-greener" myth.
14. PCs excel at family-hotseat-group-play, too. First of all, You Don't Know Jack was working the lines long before the likes of Scene It!. Second, sure, there's stuff like Buzz Quiz and, you know, Amercan Idol Encore 2 on tap, but they're still a tiny fraction of the broader number of family-friendly party games you can pull up (many for free) and play on your PC, whether piped through an office monitor or jacked into your Dolby-plasma master-lounge-center.
15. PC display screens trump living room TVs. The old CRT/NTSC disparity's finally disappearing now that HDTV and 1080p's got a foot in, but I'll still see your 1920 x 1080 max lines of resolution and raise you 3840 x 2400 while you're waiting for market momentum to clumsily foist the Next Big Thing on entertainment centers (while ironically bleeding the life out of picture quality by compressing the living you-know-what out of on-demand digital video). Okay, so picture quality's not as big a deal these days for non-videophiles, and graphics bickering is pretty 1990s. Still, I needed a 15th point, so there you go!
In the beginning Windows' registry consisted of two files totalling around 5mb in size. Today it consists of at least 12 files with the Software file itself being 30mb or bigger in size. As the size of the registry has exploded, so has the trash and clutter in it. It may seem like a daunting task, but cleaning the registry properly can fix system problems, speed your computer up, and make it run more efficiently.
I have spent many years developing and refining thousands of procedures to do just that. I could share these methods of hunting down the trash with you and let you find them and delete them by hand, but if you were to sit down at your computer right now and work nonstop, you would still be busy with them a week from now when the next issue of Ray's Computer Tips arrives. By then your registry would have new clutter and you would have to start all over again.
To make registry cleaning easier on everyone, I wrote a program called RegVac Registry Cleaner (http://regvac.com/regvac.htm) to perform those procedures. It has been so successful that several companies have asked me to model their registry cleaners after RegVac and even more have copied processes that first debutted in RegVac.
The first place RegVac cleans is the HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT section (the Classes Vac in RegVac does this). This section contains settings for the classes of Windows. Think of a huge box full of snakes and you will get an idea of how complicated and interwoven it is. It is so complicated that many registry cleaners bypass it or simply perform surface scans of it. RegVac uses over a hundred processes to follow each tentacle of each class deep into this area and make sure that they abide by the rules.
Next RegVac validates the entries in 22 lists with 7 different methods (the FilesList Vac does this). This is a minor part of RegVac but the bulk of most other registry cleaners even though they usually do not clean all 22 lists.
Another part of RegVac, the Software Vac, which is unique to RegVac, finds old software sections in the registry and provides a way to remove that software's entire branch. Other registry cleaners only remove a few entries in this area often leaving huge portions of the registry that do nothing but take up space and get in the way.
Even more trash can be discovered in hundreds of stashes used to store data you will never use. Most registry cleaners do not even touch these. The Stash Vac lists these stashes and lets you go through and select which ones to empty out. Please use caution when using the Stash Vac because some of the items listed there may be important. For example, one folder in the Stash Vac lists places where data for international keyboards are stored. You probably will never use the data for Bulgarian keyboards, so you can remove it, but if you live in the US you may experience problems after removing the United States 101 keyboard. The items that you can safely remove are usually obvious.
Last but not least, when cleaning the registry, you should look for broken links to files on the computer (this is what the Bad Link Vac does). If a file is referenced in the registry but it does not exist on your hard drive, that is a good indicator that something is wrong. Many programmers start out writing a registry cleaner thinking all it has to do is check for these broken links and remove them. In fact, that is all many registry cleaners do.
Even though that is all they do, they often don't do it correctly. If you check the results of such scans, you will find out that many of the broken links are really good links. I spent several months refining this part of RegVac so that as far as I know it is 100% accurate. Despite this, please realize that some software enter broken links in the registry and require them to be there in order for them to run. RegVac skips the ones it knows about, but you still need to be careful with this part of RegVac.

Tips for Comparing Apples to Apples
Now it’s time to schedule the free demonstration and take the next step in your HRIS selection process. No two demos are going to be the same, so it’s often difficult to compare the various systems. This is where I suggest taking charge of the demo presentation; if you want to compare apples to apples, you need to make sure you see the apples do the same thing (I call this "standardizing" the demo). Ask the presenter to run you through a few standard processes during each. For example, a walk-through the steps to hiring a new employee, to terminating an employee, to running a turnover report, or to setting up a medical benefit plan. Grade each product on how well or how poorly they handle each of these functions. If there are specific reports that you must have, make sure to request a demonstration of how those reports are created.
HRIS Support
Just as you standardized the sales demonstrations, you should also standardize how you view the support for each company. Ask about hours, response times, costs, product improvement updates, and government compliance updates. Are all updates included with the annual support? I would also ask what happens if you uncover an actual bug in the system. What are the steps to resolving such a software problem? The sales person may tell you the system is bug-free, but don’t believe it; make sure they have a system through which you can report problems.
Making Sure the Person Responsible for Your HRIS Implementation is Qualified

In brief, make sure the person who will be performing your implementation has the experience needed to complete a clean install. Being certified is not the same thing as being experienced; I would make sure they have had at least 10 implementations under their belt of the same systems you are purchasing, and with companies which are similar in size to your own.

Ultrasonic Flow Meter Installation Points
Before installing an ultrasonic flow meter the most important consideration is the medium to be measured. Raw sewage usually requires a Doppler ultrasonic flow meter whilst distilled or clean water requires a time of flight ultrasonic flow meter. However, what about applications that use a combination of liquids or liquids with small particles? For applications where the media has particles of 100 PPM or more a Doppler ultrasonic flow meter would be the most suitable device to use. For media with particles smaller than 100PPM, such as oil, sea water, or even gray water a time of flight ultrasonic flow meter types are most suitable.
A time of flight ultrasonic flow meter requires a totally full pipe to work. While a typical Doppler ultrasonic flow meter is more suited to a completely full pipe, it is possible under certain conditions to utilise these units on partially full pipes.
Sensor Installation
In an ideal condition a straight length of horizontal pipe that is at least fifteen pipe diameters long is required. This should be free of valves, inflow and outflow diffusers and should be as far away from pumps as possible. When using a time of flight ultrasonic flow meter on an installation that has a pump or T-section, a straight length of up to 50 pipe diameters to obtain an accurate flow reading.
Most ultrasonic flow meter models are unable to measure downward flow in a vertical pipe. The pipe surface must also be clean and free from rust or paint bubbles. Also the ultrasonic flow meter transducers must be clean and have a substantial amount of couplant material to make a good acoustic connection.
For horizontal pipes a time of flight ultrasonic flow meter should have the transducers fitted on the side of the pipe. This will allow more accurate flow readings as generally air bubbles are located on the top of a pipe while sediment falls to the bottom. Doppler transducers are generally installed on the top of the pipe.
A typical time of flight ultrasonic flow meter will have two transducers, one will be specifically for the upstream direction of the flow, while the other for the downstream. If you are unsure if the flow direction, you will normally see a negative flow rate if you have installed these incorrectly. If the transducers are installed correctly and you are still having a problem in obtaining a correct figure from your ultrasonic flow meter, try different sound path settings. This will require you to move your transducers up and down the pipe as the ultrasonic wave is reflected a different number of times on the pipe walls. Generally, the more transit paths, the more accurate your reading. However, the more transit paths can also lead to a weaker signal which can cause setup difficulties; this is why it is recommended that you always start with the simple "V" method.
Take care in setting the exact liquid type, sensor spacing and pipe measurements. If you have incorrectly programmed any of these variables in your ultrasonic flow meter you will get either an incorrect reading, or no flow reading at all. Once you have taken the time and accomplished your first ultrasonic flow meter installation, future measurements will be much easier.
Are you running Windows XP and experiencing the slow startup problem? It’s very annoying waiting for your computer to boot or load programs. I used to be able to make a whole pot of coffee while my computer booted. Here’s a few things you can do to speed up the process.
If you have an older computer that tests the memory every time you boot and goes through multiple startup screens there is a way to eliminate that. Restart your computer and enter the bios. Look for boot options and enable quick boot. This will enable you to skip all the unnecessary startup screens and other sequences.
Not all PCs have that option. Next you will want to look at your antivirus program. Going to the options menu and make sure it is not scanning every time you start your computer. If it is disable this option, this can really slow down your boot time.
You’ll also want to do a general cleaning up your hard drive. You can do that by selecting your hard drive and running the disk cleanup. You can also remove any old programs that you no longer use, the less software your PC has to load, the faster it will be. Next you will want to eliminate any startup programs that you do not absolutely need. The problem is Windows XP made this difficult. There really is no easy way to do it. You can download a third-party program like tweak UI. Or most registry repair programs will enable you to remove startup programs safely.
Next you will want to do a full virus scan and also a scan for spyware and ad aware. If you haven’t performed maintenance on your computer for a while you might be shocked at what it finds. All of the above suggestions may help, but in most cases, the biggest problem for slow boot is a corrupted or damaged Registry. You will need a good registry repair program to fix it.
Your computer’s registry contains all the files and settings that your software needs to reference every time it loads.
